A Legacy of Design and Challenge

Valley Country Club’s private 18-hole, par-72 course is a masterpiece of golf course design and natural beauty. Originally created as a nine-hole course in the 1920s by British architect W.H. Follett, it was expanded to 18 holes in the 1960s under the guidance of renowned designer Geoffrey Cornish. This careful evolution resulted in a harmonious layout that combines elements of traditional and modern course architecture, offering a unique experience for players of all levels.

The course stretches over 6,600 yards and is designed to challenge golfers with a blend of small greens inspired by Donald Ross’s style and larger greens reminiscent of Cornish’s work. Every detail has been thoughtfully crafted to ensure a memorable round, from the strategic placement of hazards to the rolling terrain that enhances the overall playability.

Valley Country Club

Hole Overview

Straight away par four starting hole. Hittng the fairway is key on this opening hole. A decent drive will leave you a short iron to an undulated green.

How to Play

Missing left will cause you to have to punch out and par becomes a difficult proposition. Miss right, and you could have a shot at the green. We advise that you just stay in the fairway.

Hole Overview

This long par 5 requires 3 strong shots to reach in regulation. Your second shot will have to be played strategically as a fairway bunker down the right and for long hitters, another bunker across the middle about 80 yards from green both come into play. A large green with unique breaks makes saving par a challenge.

How to Play

This hole is fairly wide open off of the tee, allowing you to still be in the hole if you miss the fairway. But don’t miss that second shot. Note the position of the flag for the day. You will want to be below the pin on red (front) and white (middle).

Hole Overview

A gradual uphill par 4 plays longer than the yardage. A well placed tee shot will leave you a mid to short iron into a large green. Playing short of the pin is key as this fast green slopes severely from back to front.

How to Play

Thick rough to the right and left will give you trouble. Stay in the fairway and pay attention to the description of the green.

Hole Overview

A long par 4 that requires 2 very solid shots to a large green. Fairway bunkers down the right may create a difficult second shot for long hitters. Tee shots left will require a second shot over or through trees to the green. Stay in the fairway.

How to Play

As the description notes, to make par, you need to be in the fairway. Left or right, you are going to most likely encounter some large trees.

Hole Overview

This narrow par 5 has out of bounds along the entire left side and a pond on the right near the landing area making this a very demanding driving hole. Long hitters can go for the green in two but the safe play is to layup to 100 yards. Three bunkers short and right of the very small green will come into play.

How to Play

Long, accurate hitters can definitely reach this elevated green in two. Our advice is to sacrifce distance and hit two accurate shots allowing you to pitch your third shot onto the green for the birdie putt.

Hole Overview

This may be the shortest par 3 on the course but may not be the least difficult. An accurate tee shot to a very narrow, hourglass shaped green is required. Missing the green left will make for a very difficult up and down. Even tee shots landing on the green do not guarantee a par as this slick green slopes severely from back to front and left to right.

How to Play

Looks can be deceiving. And as the description notes, even being on the green off the tee, doesn’t guarantee par. Take your time reading your putts. Missing left or right requires a great second shot to possibly save par.

Hole Overview

A good tee shot will leave you a mid iron into the smallest green on the golf course. Many approach shots will run to the back of the green. The green is very quick from back to front. Hitting the green is key to making par on this short par 4.

How to Play

Be sure you are lined up on your tee shot toward the fairway as that has been an issue for many golfers on 7. Set yourself up for a second shot you are comfortable with. Bunkers guard this already tiny green on both sides.

Hole Overview

This long downhill par 3 requires a long iron/hybrid or even a fairway wood off the tee to a small green that has a very severe left to right slope. If your tee shot misses a little left, you may be in for a very nice reward.

How to Play

Landing it on the green is already difficult, but the description is correct. If you miss slightly left, you may be in for a pleasant surprise. Miss right and you will either be out of bounds or hitting out of a thick rough.

Hole Overview

A solid par 4 usually playing into the wind requires an accurate tee shot. This will leave you a fairway wood to mid iron into another one of Valleys small and undulated green with bunkers left and right. Beware of the out of bounds up the entire right side of this hole.

How to Play

There is danger both left and right and this green is small and difficult. The mid-handicap golfer should be very pleased with par on this hole.

Hole Overview

Straight forward par 4 with a fairway bunker on the right side and a grass mound on the left side. A good tee shot will leave you a mid to short iron to this large 3 tier green. Be sure to hit enough club to reach the pin.

How to Play

The key is to definitely reach the pin regardless of where the flag is. Careful to not hit it too far on red (front) and white (middle) flagged pins. You may end up having to put down a tier and that ball may end up back in the fairway if you are not careful.

Hole Overview

One of Valley’s signature holes and most picturesque hole. This downhill then uphill dogleg right will require an accurate tee shot which will leave a mid to short iron to the smallish green. Beware of the out of bounds along the entire left side. Try to stay short of the pin with your second shot or you’ll be looking at a very fast putt from the back to the front.

How to Play

With out of bounds on the left and a tree-lined right side, accuracy is important here. The fairway slopes downward as well, so even a well placed drive might have a difficult lie for the second shot. Some will hit a wood or a hybrid to stay short of the slope. Longer hitters will clear it without issue.

Hole Overview

A long par 3 that will require anything from a long iron to driver over water to a large double tier green. This hole usually plays directly into the wind making the tee shot even more difficult. A 3 here is a great score.

How to Play

Some have called this one of the most difficult par 3 holes in the area. The length of the hole is just one obstacle, the water another. But depending on where the pin is located, getting on the green doesn’t ensure anything just yet. You want to be sure you are on the correct tier or else that next putt is going to be a difficult one, especially putting downhill from back to front.

Hole Overview

A long and narrow par 4 that will require an accurate tee shot to hit the fairway. Second shots are a challenge to this double green that appears to the eye to slope from back to front. Don’t let looks deceive you as shots hit into the green will run to the back of the green where water makes for a big penalty. Keep the ball short.

How to Play

While it is narrow, there is a path to par if you miss slightly left or right. But definitely leave that approach shot a little short or else you will definitely land in the water behind the hole..

Hole Overview

A downhill tee shot makes this hole play a bit shorter. With fairway bunkers down the left side and trees along the right, you’ll need to hit the fairway or miss just left to take advantage of this short par 4 with a receptive green. Birdies are available here.

How to Play

Listen to the description of this hole. Missing right leaves you in big trouble. In the fairway or just left and short of the bunker and you have a clear shot at the green and a great shot at birdie.

Hole Overview

This shorter par 4 is the number 1 handicap hole on the backside. A good drive will leave you a short iron into the green. Tee shots left of the fairway will have to deal with trees and the pond on your second shot. Make sure you know the yardage for your second shot or you may be left with a very long putt on a very difficult putting green.

How to Play

This seemingly straightforward hole is filled with pitfalls. Miss right and you are out of bounds. Miss left, and you have trees and a pond to deal with. And even if you are in the fairway, you need a well-placed approach shot to not leave yourself in a potential three-putt situation.

Hole Overview

A medium length par 5 that requires a good tee shot for players to attempt to get home in two. The bunkers along the front left and right will come into play on your second and/or third shots. Putting on this large green will be a challenge as the green slopes from the back to the front and from the left to the right.

How to Play

Average to long hitters have their best opportunity to get on in two on this hole, but it will be impossible without a great drive in the fairway. Playing this hole conservatively should result in a birdie putt for accurate players. This is a good chance at par for higher handicap players provided you leave yourself a manageable putt.

Hole Overview

This par 3 over water has a large grass bunker along the entire left side of the green and a greenside bunker along the right. Both of these areas will make up and downs for par difficult. Depending on the placement of the pin and the wind direction, players will hit mid irons to hybrids on this hole.

How to Play

By handicap, this is considered the “easiest” hole at Valley. Land on the green and par should be the worst on your card. Miss just left or right and you may have to flop from the left and dig carefullly out of the sand on the right.

Hole Overview

A very strong uphill finishing hole that plays much longer than you think. Your blind second shot brings in a series of fairway bunkers along the left side. You should be aimed at the practice area behind the 18th green. This small double-tiered green with traps left and right make par a good score.

How to Play

Your first two shots will be very important. The extremely wide fairway allows for some forgiveness on the drive and your second shot could leave you with a very reasonable third shot onto the green. A conservative approach will lead to a better score here.
